Pediatric Cardiac Surgery

Until recently parents whose children needed specialized cardiac surgery due to congenital disease or defects were forced to travel to places such as Dallas or Houston for specialized care. But no more.

With the addition of leading pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon James E. Harrell, Jr., M.D., we've brought together the resources, expertise and personalized care from
Covenant Heart Institute and Covenant Children's Hospital to form the region's only heart surgery program for children.

Capabilities
Through the dedicated facilities of Covenant Heart Institute, the Pediatric Heart Surgery program at Covenant brings the full complement of facilities and services to the treatment of children's heart disease. These include:

  • Complete noninvasive diagnostic services - including echocardiography - for accurate evaluation of heart function.
  • Full computerized cardiac catheterization labs, allowing for instantaneous analysis of cardiac function and treatment, with staffing available 24 hours a day.
  • Electrophysiology lab to study and treat electrical abnormalities of the heart.
  • Dedicated cardiovascular surgical suites, with staffing available around the clock.
  • Three ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) pumps for the support of patients with cardiorespiratory failure.

Surgical Services
The Pediatric Heart Surgery program at Covenant Children's Hospital offers surgical repair of the full spectrum of complex congenital heart disease, including:

  • Patent Ductus Arteriosus
  • Septal Defects - Atrial Septal Defect; Ventricular Septal Defect; Atrioventricular Canal Defect
  • Valve Disease - Mitral Valve and Tricuspid Valve Disorders
  • Defects Causing Obstruction - Pulmonary Stenosis; Aortic Stenosis; Coarctation of the Aorta

In Case of Emergency
An important ally to the Pediatric Heart Surgery Program is the
Covenant Children's Emergency Center. Staffed 24 hours a day by pediatric emergency room physicians, nurses and support personnel trained in emergency care of acutely ill or injured children, it is the region's only emergency center for children and is equipped with the highest level of medical technology designed especially for children. In addition, Covenant is a designated Trauma Center, providing the complete range of emergency trauma services.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Covenant Children's Hospital includes a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit, where continuous monitoring ensures detection of any changes in the patients' conditions. Each room is enclosed to allow privacy, yet is easily accessible by medical personnel during emergencies.

Pediatric intensivists Tiva Kasemsri, M.D., and Terry Furgiuele, M.D., work with the Pediatric Heart Surgery program as well as Susan Haefner, M.D., who has special interest in pediatric cardiac care and ECMO support. Marty Harrell, R.N., pediatric nurse specialist, also is an integral part of the patient's experience throughout the program.
