DeBakey, M.D., Distinguished Lectureship Series is an annual series of lectures presented at Covenant that features a renowned physician or surgeon. The event brings awareness to heart disease and information on the latest advances in cardiac care. The 2nd Annual Covenant Heart Institute Michael E. Debakey, M.D., Distinguished Lectureship Series feature presentation: "A History of Cardiopulmoary Bypass: 'Friend or Foe'?" by O. Wayne Isom, M.D.

O.Wayne Isom, M.D.

Born in Lubbock and raised in Idalou, O. Wayne Isom, M.D., is Cardiothoracic Surgeon-in-Chief at New York Hospital and also serves as Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cornell Medical College in New York City.  Dr Isom heads one of the most renown heart surgery programs in the nation, leading a team that performs some 1,500 operations each year.  Some of Dr. Isom’s better known patients include Walter Cronkite, David Letterman, and Larry king.

   

The 3rd Annual Covenant Heart Institute Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., Distinguished Lectureship Series feature presentation: "Current Status of Heart Transplantation and Medical Assist Devices" by George P. Noon, M.D.

In 1998, Dr. Noon performed the first implantations of the MicroMed DeBakey Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) on patients in Europe along with surgeons in Berlin and Vienna. The miniaturized heart pump was the brainchild of Drs. Noon and DeBakey and engineers at NASA. The first transplantation of the MicroMed DeBakey VAD was performed by Dr. Noon in June 2000. The DeBakey VAD has been implanted in over 100 patients in the United States and Europe combined.

John L. Ochsner, M.D.

Chairman Emeritus, Department of Surgery Senior Consultant

Dr. John Ochsner is Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Surgery at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned his medical degree from Tulane. He completed surgical residencies at Baylor University Affiliated Hospitals and Texas Children's Hospital where he served a Chief Surgical Resident at each. Dr. Ochsner is board certified in surgery, thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery and has been on staff at Ochsner since 1961. His expertise includes heart surgery and heart transplantation and vascular surgery. An international medical leader, Dr. Ochsner has served in many prominent roles including President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, President of The International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, and Chairman of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
